After Hours at House Park
A few friends and I visited House Park, a skatepark along North Lamar in downtown Austin, to meet the community and learn a thing or two. We were pleasantly surprised by the excitement that welcomed us, their openness to teach what they know and their willingness to share their backgrounds.
After hours at House Park, bikers, skaters and roller skaters congregate to hone a skill they all have in common, spending hours to perfect a sequence of tricks.
The street-lit atmosphere invited us to a high-energy culture built on a foundation of craft, independence, and showmanship. Their skating did most of the talking, but when we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and conversations.
The people we met were eager to both show and teach what they knew. The simplest of tricks were impossible for me.
At the end of the day, it was exciting to engage with a community of Austin that was eager to invite us in, share their stories and put on a show.
