To the worm,

To the worm,

Thank you!

You are very brave to live underground, or within the soil in the way you do. I would be scared, or at least lost, digging through the dark soil. You have embraced a realm totally unknown to us and have made it your own. I can only imagine how many of you are under my feet at any given moment. And for that, I am glad. The part you play in the decomposition process is invaluable and makes you an intrinsic part of the life cycle.

I imagine it is fruitless work to help decompose once living things. Unless you enjoy it, as a food or a treat. In any case — we do not judge you or think that is gross. We love you.

Sincerely,

Khalid Grant Black
